PACTOK Asia Pacific Community Networking
The Pactok project is a growing partnership between various interested
organisations. As the project unfolds, the groups will grow. At the
present time the project partners are:
* the Ideas Centre, Sydney
* Pegasus Networks
* the Australian Foundation for the Peoples of the South Pacific
* the Centre for Pacific Studies at the University of New South Wales
* the Network of Overseas Student's Collectives in Australia (NOSCA)
The hub of the Pactok network is located at the Ideas Centre in
Sydney. The network currently supports additional local hubs in Port
Moresby and Honiara, Sarawak and Bangkok, as well as a number of
individual users calling from Asia, Australia, the Pacific Islands.
The network hub is linked to Pegasus with over 2000 subscribers in
Australia and the local region. Pegasus itself is part of the
worldwide network of the Association for Progressive Communications
(APC) which has many thousands of subscribers and interconnections
with all major electronic mail networks in academia and science.
Pactok aims to employ the most appropriate technology available for
the task. While this depends on the particular conditions, a range of
technical solutions are available to suit most needs. In a number of
situations the most appropriate solution at the present time is one in
which the low cost, easy-to-use characteristics of FidoNet technology
are combined with the reliability and extensive information resources
of the APC network.
This has been achieved by implementing a private Fido Technology
Network (FTN) as an adjunct to the Pegasus node. The term FTN is
preferred so as make clear the important distinction between this
private network and the public FidoNet.
