  4. PACTOK  Asia Pacific Community Networking

  6. The Pactok project is a growing partnership between various interested
  7. organisations. As the project unfolds, the groups will grow. At the
  8. present time the project partners are:

  10. *  the Ideas Centre, Sydney
  11. *  Pegasus Networks
  12. *  the Australian Foundation for the Peoples of the South Pacific
  13. *  the Centre for Pacific Studies at the University of New South Wales
  14. *  the Network of Overseas Student's Collectives in Australia (NOSCA)

  16. The hub of the Pactok network is located at the Ideas Centre in
  17. Sydney. The network currently supports additional local hubs in Port
  18. Moresby and Honiara, Sarawak and Bangkok, as well as a number of
  19. individual users calling from Asia, Australia, the Pacific Islands.

  21. The network hub is linked to Pegasus with over 2000 subscribers in
  22. Australia and the local region. Pegasus itself is part of the
  23. worldwide network of the Association for Progressive Communications
  24. (APC) which has many thousands of subscribers and interconnections
  25. with all major electronic mail networks in academia and science.

  27. Pactok aims to employ the most appropriate technology available for
  28. the task. While this depends on the particular conditions, a range of
  29. technical solutions are available to suit most needs. In a number of
  30. situations the most appropriate solution at the present time is one in
  31. which the low cost, easy-to-use characteristics of FidoNet technology
  32. are combined with the reliability and extensive information resources
  33. of the APC network.

  35. This has been achieved by implementing a private Fido Technology
  36. Network (FTN) as an adjunct to the Pegasus node. The term FTN is
  37. preferred so as make clear the important distinction between this
  38. private network and the public FidoNet.
